Although some of our homes date back to the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, South Middle River was originally developed as a neighborhood by Progresso Homes, and was known as Middle River Heights, Progresso. Now named South Middle River, with more than 2,700 households, our highly diverse neighborhood is one of the largest in Fort Lauderdale. We are an officially recognized neighborhood of the City of Fort Lauderdale. South Middle River is bound on the North by the South Fork of the Middle River, on the West by NW 9th Avenue (Powerline Road), on the East by NE 4th Avenue (inclusive of both sides), and on the South by Sunrise Boulevard.
Whether you rent or own in this neighborhood you are eligible to join our Civic Association, which is one of the most active and effective in the City. The Mission of South Middle River Civic Association is 1) To be an inclusive Association that enhances the quality of life for all who own or rent a business or residence in South Middle River, 2) To build on the shared strengths of our diversity, 3) To rebuild our community’s infrastructure, as detailed in our Master Plan (dated April 2006 and approved by Fort Lauderdale City Commission), 4) To provide a safe and nurturing environment for everyone, and 5) to bring serenity and prosperity to to everyone in South Middle River by creating a community that is characterized by its natural beauty and goodwill among neighbors.
The Association is a member of the Council of Fort Lauderdale Civic Associations, and one of the founding members of the 13thStreet Alliance. SMRCA was also instrumental in the formation of the Central City CRA, which covers one-third of our neighborhood. South Middle River Civic Association’s Board of Directors and Committees actively work with City officials and other partners for neighborhood improvement in areas of safety, and security, Code Enforcement, drainage, parking, tree canopy, connectivity, traffic calming, beautification, sense of community, and overall quality of life. The more residents and business owners who join the Association, the stronger our collective voice and the more we can accomplish.
We imagine a neighborhood where neighbors from many different backgrounds come together to form a clean, safe, and affordable place to live. These neighbors work together to clean up the neighborhood, fix up the homes, and create green spaces for children to play in. These neighbors work with local businesses to create a thriving local economy that provides goods and services for the neighborhood. This is the vision we are striving to implement.
